The future of virtual worlds and of the world in general, on Metanomics

On  MixedRealities I try to situate the discussions about virtual worlds in a broader context of social media and the evolution of business.

The current crisis will lead to another kind of capitalism, and it is too soon to judge whether this new capitalism will be better or worse than what we have now. Some vectors of change point towards a future of a billion one-person enterprises—people who act as free agents moving freely and frequently from project to project as their skills, focus, and passion shift.

In such a world education will be a permanent necessity for individuals/companies, not necessarily in the context of the existing educational institutions.

These kind of dramatic shifts in society are the result of geo-politics, longer term evolution in capitalism itself and of disruptive technological change – such as (but not limited to) the internet, social media, virtual collaboration.

Tomorrow, on Monday March 9, at Noon SLT/PDT (9 pm CET), metaverse evangelist Ian Hughes will disuss some of these issues on Metanomics.
Ian Hughes recently resigned his position as metaverse evangelist for IBM and launched Feeding Edge, a consultancy on emerging technology. Hughes was with IBM for 18 years, from green screens to the virtual life, and will discuss his move from intrapreneur to entrepreneur.

You can read what Ian has to say about the upcoming Metanomics event on his new blog, Life at the Feeding Edge. It seems he is more than willing to go off topic, but these are very interesting discussion possibilities:

1. The history of creating a movement like eightbar and mass adoption via social media of an idea within the constraints of a corporate environment, dare I say the birth of enterprise 2.0.
2. Metaverses and virtual worlds themselves. What have we done so far and what can we do next. What are the sorts of applications we can expect to see layered on top of the experiences we already have today. The recession, corporate activity, open source platforms etc.
3. Where are we going now? The future of Augmented Reality,Rapid Fabrication/3d printers, merging with the games industries etc.

You can meet me (or my avatar Olando7 Decosta) during the Metanomics show at Malburns’ Metahub in Chilbo, Second Life.
