Remembering the torn fields of the Great War (update)

(updating with comment and link regarding the sim in Second Life)

In this time of the year we remember the dead. The 20th century was particularly innovative in industrialized killing and madness, starting with the First World War. The Great War lives on in the memories of so many families and even in politics.

If ever you are in the city of Ypres (Belgium), I recommend visiting the In Flanders Fields Museum. It does not only tellĀ  the story of the politics and the big troop movements, but also the story of individuals. It even immerses you in their situation – even though you’ll realize it’s impossible to really approach what it must have been.

This beautiful machinima made by Tara Yeats does not try to replicate those experiences, it evokes them, remembers them respectfully, and by doing so connects us with the victims and what they endured.

Visiting the sim

The sim builder CSteph Submariner did a great job in Second Life, combining historical information and analysis with emotional engagement. The sim Frideswide is definitely worth a visit, I hope also young people will be able to visit it.
