Another reason to rejoice today… an interesting conference has been announced, about Identity in Virtual Worlds, a topic which fascinates me. Furthermore, the conference takes place in Amsterdam, another indication that my part of the world is developing serious interest in virtual worlds.
I found the announcement on the Merge blog:
The Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences in the Netherlands (KNAW) sent us an invitation to a symposium which will be held on the 18th of September in Amsterdam called ‘Identity in Virtual Worlds‘. They kindly asked us if we could help spread the message, so here is a short translation of the flyer. The speakers will be talking in Dutch though.
Who am I?
This is the central question. Virtual worlds, web 2.0 application like Hyves and Facebook and games like World of Warcraft all give us the possibility to become someone completely different. Or to expose yourself to the world. Identification on the internet offers new chances for personal development, but also new threats, for example privacy issues or manipulation.
More information on Merge (in English) and in Dutch on the site of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (Royal Netherlands Academy of the Arts and Sciences).
MixedRealities will cover this event.
